JOBS! JOBS! JOBS!
"We have not yet begun to fight to foster diverse businesses and a strong employment base in Michigan," says Huckleberry - who helped lead the fight against Electrolux slinking off to Mexico and abandoning 2,800 hardworking men and women.
Huckleberry's campaign against the destructive NAFTA and CAFTA impacts attracted national print and TV attention. Before he ever decided to seek public office, this restaurateur launched a "placemat" campaign urging diners to send in their "Save Our Jobs" comments to legislators and Congress. He has worked with local, county officials, with Gov. Granholm, with Labor Unions and small-business owners to improve Montcalm, Ionia and Michigan's attractiveness for jobs and companies.
"NOW!" insists Huck. "Here's what we do now to help create jobs:
"DIVERSIFY by shifting our priority to alternative and renewable energies. This will help our farming community and add jobs by planting season.
Also, invest in life sciences and advanced manufacturing… another ripe area for long-term job growth.
"EDUCATION is the key to our future economic stability. We must expand our efforts at re-training our manufacturing base into highly-skilled 21st Century workers. And our returning veterans need our help in training for tomorrow's jobs too.
"HEALTH CARE'S importance as a sector of our economy cannot be overlooked. There are many opportunities for men and women in this field and its related fields. As we work towards providing health care for every man, woman, child in America, we can also be creating solid jobs as well."
"The economy and jobs - good solid family-supporting, tax-paying jobs - are tied together," points out Huck. "We can't have a good economy without jobs."
